Dream vehicles twice
The S-Class coupé and cabrio, as rightful members of this large and appreciated family of luxury automobiles, benefit from the important innovations recently introduced in the saloon. These include new or expanded driving assistance systems, the modern control and display concept with widescreen cockpit and new generation of steering wheels, the ENERGIZING comfort control and the most recent generation of infotainment equipment. An equipment reserved exclusively for the two-door models, where it is part of the standard equipment, are the innovative rear lights in OLED technology. Even more dynamic is the new biturbo V8 engine in the S 560 4MATIC Coupé and S 560 Cabrio.
“The new S-Class coupes and cabriolets embody our interpretation of modern luxury with an exclusive, unmistakable design and a cabin that conveys an impression of high value with its noble materials. But that is not all. Both four-seater luxury vehicles are equipped with the latest cutting-edge technology of the S-Class,” highlights Britta Seeger, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Distribution Mercedes-Benz Cars.
The evolution of the design accentuates the sporty aspect of the automobiles and is an expression of high technical competence. The S-Class Coupé and Cabrio incorporates a front apron with a chrome front splitter and voluminous air intakes. The reshaped side skirts and chrome trim on the double exhaust outlet in V12 design accentuate the dynamic appearance.
The AMG Line equipment line, standard for the Spanish market, is more dynamic, as a result of the incorporation of new front and rear aprons. A particularly striking detail on the front are the large air intakes with two chrome profiles in each opening.
Innovative OLED rear lights as standard
A new attribute of the S-Class Coupé and S-Class Convertible are the innovative OLED rear lights. This technology ("organic light emitting diode") uses especially thin layers of electroluminescent organic material, deposited on a glass plate. The 66 ultra-flat OLEDs appear to float freely within the taillight, emitting a particularly homogeneous light in all directions, thus configuring a unique and exclusive day and night design. When unlocking and locking the vehicle, an animated light sequence is generated, followed by the rear position light increasing in intensity. Naturally, the new rear lights use the multi-level lighting technology common in Mercedes-Benz passenger cars for the brake light and indicators. These lights shine with greater or lesser intensity depending on the movement of the vehicle and the clarity of the environment (day/night).
Two new wheels allow a more pronounced personalization of the vehicle in combination with the AMG Line. These are 50,8 cm (20″) 10-spoke AMG wheels in titanium gray and polished to a high gloss (optional for the AMG Line; including widening of the AMG wheel arches), or gloss black and polished. at high brightness (optional for the AMG Line Plus line).
Luxury salon with widescreen driving position and new generation of steering wheels
As a measure to rejuvenate the cabin, three new trim elements are offered (glossy brown walnut burr wood, satin gray ash wood and designo flowing lines magnolia wood), as well as three new upholsteries (exclusive nappa leather designo AMG Line Plus porcelain /Tiziano red, exclusive designo nappa leather porcelain/Tiziano red and exclusive designo nappa leather AMG Line Plus Bengal red/black).
The cabin of the new S-Class models is characterized by the two new 12,3-inch diagonal high-resolution displays. Both elements merge in view under a single cover glass and form a widescreen driving position that accentuates as a central element the horizontal structuring of the interior design.
The widescreen cockpit includes as an instrument panel a large-format display in the driver's direct field of vision, where virtual clocks are displayed, and a central display located above the center console. The fully digital cockpit allows you to select three very different styles, called "Classic", "Sport" and "Progressive". Depending on personal preferences or the selected interior equipment, the driver can quickly vary the style using the instrument cluster and central display. The instrument panel shows the driver the contents of the menus – for example, trip or consumption data – and the navigation screens or the ECO display. This element helps the driver to improve the efficiency of his driving style.
Both models have touch control buttons on the steering wheel. These elements react to swiping movements with your fingers like a smartphone screen. In this way, the driver can control all the functions of the instrument panel and the infotainment system without having to take their hands off the steering wheel. Another novelty is the possibility of activating the DISTRONIC and Tempomat systems using control elements integrated into the steering wheel. The infotainment system can also be operated via the touch panel with controller on the center console.
The LINGUATRONIC voice control now extends to other vehicle functions, beyond the infotainment system. In this way, it is possible to control with your voice the air conditioning, heating and ventilation of the seats, the lighting (ambient light, reading light, light in the rear seats), the air freshener/ionization, the massage function of the seats and the Head-up-Display. Depending on the language chosen and the vehicle's equipment, this equipment includes up to 450 individual voice commands.
ENERGIZING comfort control increases well-being and performance capacity
The ENERGIZING comfort control (optional equipment) connects different vehicle comfort systems together. It selectively combines air conditioning (including ambience), seat (heating, ventilation, massage) and surface heating functions, as well as different lighting and musical effects, enabling a well-being setting that is especially tailored to the mood. or to the client's personal preferences. In this way, the well-being and concentration capacity of the occupants can be increased.
Depending on the equipment, you can choose between six programs:
· Freshness
· Heat
· Vitality
· Pleasant atmosphere
· Welfare
· Training (three training series—Muscle Relaxation, Muscle Activation, Balance—with several exercises each)
Each program lasts ten minutes. They are displayed graphically and in color in the media viewer, with appropriate musical accompaniment. At the factory, five songs are memorized per program. The “Vitality” program, for example, is characterized by fast music with many beats per minute, so the S-Class repertoire includes songs like “Feelin good” by Leon Riskin. If you prefer to play your own music—using, for example, the Media Interface—the genre is automatically analyzed in the background and assigned to one program or another based on the number of beats per minute (bpm). It is possible to delete certain functions from each of the programs.
The ENERGIZING comfort control also integrates ambient lighting, perfectly adapted to the different screen designs. The 64 colors available for the extended ambient lighting (standard equipment for the Spanish market) offer numerous individual adjustment options. With light, a successful staging of the cabin is achieved, combining different colors to create chromatic concepts.
New infotainment systems and wireless smartphone charging
All S-Class models come standard with the latest generation COMAND Online infotainment system. COMAND Online offers a fast hard disk navigation device with 3D topographic representation, three-dimensional photorealistic view of buildings and three-dimensional map rotations. Numerous information is displayed on the navigation map. In addition to the traffic density in real time, for example Car-to-X warning notices, weather information, the location of gas stations, including the current fuel price, and free parking spaces are displayed.
With the help of Near Field Communication, the smartphone becomes a digital vehicle key.
The Smartphone Integration Package makes possible the use of Apple's smartphone-based CarPlay™ infotainment system and Android Auto™ system. If a compatible smartphone is connected via USB, the customer can switch if desired and activate the CarPlay™ or Android user interface.
Mobile phones can be recharged as standard without the need for cables or a mobile phone holder. The wireless charging system works with all mobile devices equipped with a screen up to 15,2 cm diagonal and compatible with the Qi standard, or that can be later equipped with this technology. The cargo area is integrated into the front of the center console compartment. Multifunction telephony (optional equipment) also allows compatible mobile phones to be connected to the vehicle's external antenna.
With the personal advisor on points of interest en route, Mercedes me connect customers can make use of numerous personalized services: from reserving a table in a restaurant, advice on tourist routes, information and booking of cultural and sporting events to shipping of navigation destinations directly to the vehicle.
New driving assistance systems with expanded functions
The S-Class Coupé and Convertible takes a new step on the roadmap for autonomous driving with new or expanded driver assistance systems. The active distance assistant DISTRONIC and the active steering assistant help the driver even more comfortably to maintain a safe distance and guide the vehicle. For example, automatically adapting the speed when cornering or when approaching an intersection or roundabout (individual functions may show differences in different countries). To achieve this, the active distance assistant DISTRONIC uses a larger volume of map and navigation data than before.
See-able undercarriage just got more precise
The MAGIC BODY CONTROL suspension with active cornering function was introduced in 2014 in the S-Class Coupé as a world first in a production car. This equipment is part of the standard equipment of the Mercedes-AMG 65 Coupé and tilts the body up to 2,65° towards the inside of the curve, thus reducing the lateral forces to which the occupants are exposed. The innovative system recognizes curves with the help of the stereoscopic camera located behind the windshield. The suspension adjustment has been further refined in the new S-Class Coupé. The system's new stereoscopic camera features significantly improved performance, allowing it to operate in a higher speed range of up to 180 km/h.
The S-Class Convertible is equipped as standard with the AIRMATIC semi-active integral air suspension system with progressive damping regulation.
New V8 biturbo engine with selective cylinder shutdown
The new V8 biturbo engine in the S 560 4MATIC Coupé and S 560 Cabrio requires up to 8% less fuel than its predecessor. In order to reduce fuel consumption, a function has been implemented in the new V8 that disconnects four cylinders in the partial load range with the help of the CAMTRONIC valve control (coupé only). In this way, losses originating in the intake and exhaust cycle are reduced and the total performance of the four active cylinders increases thanks to a shift in the operating point towards the margin of greatest load. Another peculiarity is the arrangement of the turbochargers in the "V" that forms the cylinder banks. The new V8 develops 345 kW (469 HP) and 700 Nm.
