Mercedes-Benz announces the launch of Drive Pilot, Level 3 conditioned autonomous driving

May 09, 2022

The conditioned autonomous driving system, also known as Drive Pilot, can now be ordered for the S-Class and the new EQS.

This Level 3 autonomous driving system can be ordered from May 17, 2022 on both vehicles, making Mercedes-Benz the first automobile manufacturer in the world to have an international certification valid for SAE 3 Level 3 conditional autonomous driving.

What is Drive Pilot?

Drive Pilot is a Level 3 autonomous driving system, one of the most advanced levels in the world, which allows the driver to delegate driving to the system on certain occasions, such as in maximum traffic situations. In this way, the driver can relax and does not have to worry about starting and braking every time.

The system Drive Pilot is capable of controlling speed and distance while guiding the vehicle within its lane.. The system analyzes the route that the driver has determined and anticipates events, reacting to unexpected traffic situations, managing them completely autonomously either through evasive maneuvers by changing lanes or by applying the brake, all under safe conditions. maximum security.

To this end, the vehicles that mount this Level 3 of autonomous driving are equipped with many sensors that allow them to collect information. Some of them are radar, LiDAR and cameras, in addition to ultrasound and humidity sensors that also provide other data.

When will this autonomous driving system be available in Spain?

At the moment the specific date is not known, however we know that Mercedes-Benz is already working for homologation in the California and Nevada markets.

The approval of this type of extras is not an easy task and varies depending on each country or state.

What if there is a fault in the autonomous driving system or one of its sensors?

Although it is an almost unlikely situation, safety comes first, so in the event of a problem the vehicle would still be manageable by the driver. If this were to happen during the use of the autonomous driving system, the system would be able to transfer the controls back to the user in complete safety.

Advanced technology to control the position of your vehicle and that of other vehicles at all times

As we have said before, Drive Pilot uses numerous sensors that allow it to determine the positioning of the vehicle with high precision. Since these sensors and the sum of them are much more powerful than a conventional GPS system, they allow you to provide a three-dimensional image of the road and the environment with information about the geometry of the road, the characteristics of the route, traffic signs and traffic incidents.

Mercedes-Benz: pioneer in the development of automated driving safety technologies

Mercedes has not stopped showing the way in terms of automobile safety since it invented it in 1886. Safety is one of the brand's fundamental values.

Mercedes-Benz has been offering Level 2 autonomous driving systems in its vehicles for years, allowing drivers to drive more relaxed and avoiding possible accidents.

Mercedes-Benz continues to pursue the future

Mercedes' intention in the future is to reach the type 4 SAE 4 autonomous driving level that they are going to reach with the presentation of the new INTELLIGENT PARK PILOT system, with which the vehicle will be able to park completely autonomously and without a driver.
