Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series: the legend continues

October 28, 2020

As we already mentioned in our previous article, Black Series: the most radical Mercedes-AMG vehicles, the legend of the Black Series continues with its new addition, the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series.

Let's move to Affalterbach, AMG headquarters in Germany; Apparently they didn't have enough when a year ago they presented the Mercedes-AMG GTR Pro, the most radical version of the GT so far, when after 7 years one of their vehicles once again bears the surname Black Series and once again it is the most anticipated by the most purists.

If we look at the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series Closely, rather than being in front of a sports car, we could say that we are looking at a true work of art on wheels and AMG has already labeled it as the most powerful vehicle they have designed to date.

And it is not for less since the AMG GT Black Series has a V8 biturbo engine (M178 LS2) that develops a power of 730 HP and 800 Nm of maximum torque capable of going from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3,2 seconds, 4 tenths of a second less than the Mercedes-AMG GTR.

Its engine has been redesigned to achieve those figures, but we will go into more detail later. What is most striking at first glance is its aerodynamics.

El Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series is a vehicle that has been inspired by the GT3 and GT4 competition models. From them, much of the aerodynamics has been extracted.

In fact, if we look at the front, the grille is much larger than in other AMG vehicles, reminding us of the GT3 vehicles, not to mention its “huge spoiler”, that is, unlike the competition versions. The GT Black Series has the possibility of varying the downforce with a small “lip” located at the top of the spoiler that can be adjusted by 20º electronically.

Given this, let's break down the AMG GT Black Series to see what it really hides and cannot be seen with the naked eye.

Redesign of AMG's twin-turbo V8 engine

Let's start with the engine, Mercedes-AMG has gone one step further in terms of engine development and design for the GT Black Series and is the first time that a Mercedes-AMG V8 engine has a flat-plane crankshaft instead of crossed.

The difference between the two is that in a crossed crankshaft the crankpins are 90º apart from each other, while in a flat crankshaft the crankpins are 180º apart.

This change in the arrangement of the crankshaft journals allows the engine to have better bass, giving it greater acceleration and better responsiveness in terms of engine rotation at high rpm.

In addition, the AMG V8 engine is accompanied by two new twin-inlet turbos that are located between banks and are larger than in its little brother, the Mercedes-AMG GT R.

The two turbo-compressors have been equipped with larger shells, capable of increasing the air flow to the engine. Specifically, they are capable of moving up to 1.100Kg of air in one hour compared to the 900Kg provided by the turbos of the AMG GT R.

Tireless brakes

As you will understand, such a quantity of cavalry must be able to be stopped in some way and for this Mercedes-AMG has opted for carbon-ceramic brakes and calipers that are characterized by their extreme lightness and high efficiency, in fact those that have had the pleasure of Checking their true potential on a circuit they say that they are tireless.

And it has an explanation since the engineers have worked to keep the braking system well cooled at all times and not lose braking efficiency at times of maximum demand for materials.

The front brakes are cooled by air inlets located in the lower part of the grill as the Gt3 and Gt4 vehicles already do. For cooling the rear axle brakesAdditional ventilation channels have been integrated into the side trims.

Aerodynamics with DNA from racing vehicles

In terms of aerodynamics, it has not only been studied for cooling the brakes or to keep the new large intercooler cool. AMG has achieved that with the aerodynamics of the GT Black Series, up to 400kg of air pressure is exerted on the vehicle when it travels at 250 km/h, which means enormous grip for the vehicle not only on straight lines but also on twisty stretches..

The imposing front is capable of absorbing large amounts of air that are mainly used for cooling, but at the same time the front wings and the hood have been equipped with air outlets that improve the flow throughout its body.

Tires at the height of performance

Just like brakes, no car can be truly effective on a track if it does not have the right tires. To be able to circulate on the street and offer good grip on the circuit, the AMG GT Black Series has been fitted with Michelin Pilot Cup 2 tires measuring 285/35ZR-19 at the front and 335/30ZR-20 at the rear., available in two types of soft compound (M01A) or something harder (M02).

Adaptable suspensions in 9 positions

The suspension leaves the factory with a body height adapted to circuits such as the Nürburgring, but it can be modified depending on the driving or circuit.

Specifically The height of the AMG GT Black Series can be lowered by up to 10mm adapting it to demand.

Weight reduction

To considerably reduce weight, carbon fiber has been used on the hood, roof, tailgate and spoiler. The rest of the body and chassis has been made from an aluminum alloy. The result, the AMG GT Black Series sets its curb weight at 1.615 kg.

Driving aids on the street and fun on the track

As a vehicle approved for street use AMG GT Black Series It meets all the driving aids you can imagine, although we must keep in mind that its purpose is not that of a utility vehicle; For this reason, the driver has the possibility of preselecting the level of assistance that he prefers for driving.

The power delivery can be customized in up to nine different levels, the ninth being the maximum power delivery to the rear axle and allowing the most daring to make complete understeers.

Faster gearbox

The gearbox that has been mounted on the new Black Series is 7 speeds, faster and has been perfected through a cooling system to allow it to withstand the 800 Nm of total torque that the V8 biturbo engine can provide.

Exterior, interior and design

The first time images of the new Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series were leaked were in the typically Mercedes gray color. What we did not expect was that new exclusive colors were recently included for this unit.

One of them that is being widely accepted by motor lovers is the magma beam, exclusive for this model, an orange color that undoubtedly highlights many parts of the vehicle that would go unnoticed in other colors.

And for those “lucky” customers who have ordered an AMG Project One, you should know that there is the option to order the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series in a completely limited hand-painted color that includes the Mercedes logo and the colors black, gray and green from AMG Petronas. For them, two opposite color versions are available.

As for the interior, it is very similar to the Gt Pro but, even though it is a unit designed for use and enjoyment on the track, it does not cease to surprise us.

As an option, you can mount the fixed buckets with alcantara and orange trim (orange beam) or leave the now legendary Recaro ones that come as an option on all current versions of Mercedes-AMG.

Also additionally, Mercedes-AMG offers to mount a titanium interior cage to prevent deformation of the cabin in the event of an impact and provide greater rigidity to the vehicle structure, increasing cornering.

AMG GT Black Series price

In Spain, orders are now available and the starting price is €415.000, to which any extras that the client decides to add must be added. Furthermore, the vehicle will only be manufactured for one year.
