Mercedes-Benz goes ahead and adopts the 2021 emissions regulations in June

May 26, 2020

Mercedes-Benz equips all its models manufactured from 2020 onwards with technology capable of satisfying the Euro 6d-ISC-FCM standard. In this way, it advances on the majority of its competitors, where it still relies on the previous regulations.

The only constant of the Euro 6 regulations is that it is subject to permanent changes. The public debate surrounding the diesel engine and microparticle pollution in cities has led to the introduction of increasingly strict limit values and new measurement procedures. As a consequence of all these measures, the current Euro 6d regulations have been adapted several times, with the introduction of new sub-standards.

Some of them lose their validity after a very short time. For example, it is no longer possible to register vehicles equipped with engines that meet only the "Euro 6d" and "Euro 6d-TEMP" standards.
From January 1, 2021, the requirements will become stricter again and new vehicles with 6d-TEMP-EVAP-ISC and 6d-ISC engines will no longer be able to be registered. Only the registration of new vehicles with engines that satisfy the new regulations will be authorized.
There is no doubt that these strict values and their short validity periods pose a great challenge for manufacturers. For this reason, Mercedes-Benz has decided to anticipate events and has taken the necessary steps so that from June 2020 all its models are manufactured with technology capable of satisfying the Euro 6d-ISC-FCM standard. Additionally, there are already numerous models of the brand that comply with this regulation. The following summary shows which Mercedes models and which engines already satisfy the Euro 6d-ISC FCM (version of 17/04/2020):

Class A: all petrol models, A 200 d 4MATIC, A 220 d 4MATIC

Class B: all petrol models, B 200 d 4MATIC, B 220 d 4MATIC

CLA (Coupé, Shooting Brake): all gasoline models

GLA: all engines

GLB: all engines

C-Class (saloon, Estate, convertible, coupé): all diesel models

E-Class (saloon, estate, convertible, coupe): all engines (as of launch date 14/05/2020)

GLE/GLE Coupé: GLE 350 d, GLE 400 d, GLE 350

GLS: GLS 350 d, GLS 400 d

The new and decisive factor is called FCM

What distinguishes the latest Euro 6d-ISC-FCM standard from the other Euro 6d standards? Supervision of fuel consumption or Fuel Consumption Monitoring (FCM), which places the effective fuel consumption of a vehicle at the center of considerations. For this purpose, a consumption measurement system, the On-Boad Fuel Consumption Meter (OBFCM), is installed in vehicles. This system is software that measures fuel consumption in models with a combustion engine and energy consumption in vehicles with electric propulsion. In plug-in hybrid models, both values are measured, and the frequency of exclusively electric driving and when the help of the internal combustion engine is also taken into account.

Thanks to the introduction of this new regulation for all vehicles from 2021 onwards, customers will be able to easily know what consumption and emissions values they can expect. With this, the comparison between the different vehicles based on the homologation data will once again be more objective.

The “Individual consumption” of Mercedes me connect

Mercedes me connect, the digital platform for connected services, has developed a new service called “Individual consumption” that helps drivers be aware of their own fuel consumption. Conceived as a game, the customer can use the service to visualize their own consumption, and even, if they wish, to "compete" in this field with other drivers. To this end, our own consumption figures for the last 30 days are shared with those of other customers who use the same vehicle model. This creates stimuli to understand and optimize one's own driving style. Anyone who wants to go a step further can analyze their own driving style and, if it is too high, the customer can ask for recommendations to assimilate a more efficient style.
This service has been available since November 2019 in Spain for Class A and Class C customers.
