Mercedes-AMG and the new decibel regulations of the European Union

September 23, 2020

As you know, we start 2020 with the new acoustic emissions regulations proposed by the European Union, a regulation that affected all vehicles, but especially influenced high-end vehicles such as Mercedes-AMG.

And, among other things, what makes an AMG vehicle special is the union between the engine's power and its roar; especially characteristic.

Who doesn't remember the legendary sound of the Mercedes-AMG V8 block? Or more recently, the characteristic “backfire” of the 2-liter, 4-cylinder engines fitted to the A45, GLA45 and CLA 45.

The new acoustic emissions regulations

While manufacturers continued to sell cars that did not yet comply with the new regulations, Mercedes-AMG was the first car manufacturer to comply with the strict regulations.

The new regulations apply to all vehicles on the market, but considerably affect high-performance models.

The regulations that governed in 2019 accepted up to 74 decibels sound maximums and current regulations contemplates not exceeding 68 decibels in 2026.

Mercedes-AMG solution

Affalterbach got to work as soon as they heard the news and found a solution to these restrictive noise pollution measures.

The new directive 540/2014 was reflected in the new Mercedes-AMG A35, GLA 35 and CLA 35 in its two versions, the sedan and shooting brake, and was later adapted to the 45 and 45S. These are the first AMG models that strictly complied with this regulation and as you will understand, it will not be the same for the next models that Mercedes-AMG announces.

As a result, the vehicles turn out to be quieter than what we were used to from AMG, although not everything is negative. On the contrary, the user experience has been improved by installing sound sensors in the exhaust pipes that replicate, through speakers, the sound inside the vehicle's cabin.

In this way, the vehicle complies with the regulations, emitting fewer decibels externally, although for the occupants inside the vehicle it is perceived as in previous models.
